What PAIA gives you

The Promotion of Access to Information Act gives effect to the constitutional right of access to information — both information held by the state, and information held by a private body that you need in order to exercise or protect a right.

Section 51 of the Act requires every private body to compile a manual setting out what records it holds and how to ask for them. That is what the document above is.

That right is not unlimited. Section 9 of the Act recognises justifiable limitations, including the reasonable protection of privacy, commercial confidentiality, and effective and efficient governance.

How to make a request

  1. Complete the access request form. It is Appendix 1 of the manual.
  2. Send it to the Information Officer, using the contact details below.
  3. Pay the request fee. The initial request fee is R50.00. Access fees and reproduction fees may also apply — the full tariff is in section 15 and 16 of the manual. Where preparing the record will take more than six hours, a deposit of one third of the access fee is payable.
  4. We respond within 30 days. We will decide whether to grant or refuse the request and give you reasons. That period can be extended by up to a further 30 days where the request covers a large volume of records or requires a search of another office — we will tell you in writing if that happens.

If we refuse a request, the manual sets out the grounds for refusal and the remedies available to you.
